Basil, the article is right on the money. Cats make outstanding companions when properly controlled and cared for. But, on the loose they are indeed responsible for the death of many, many other species. Feral cats are a problem in rural areas that is easily addressed. The solution is a Conibear trap, which kills the animal humanely about 95% of the time. The failures are due to improperly setting the trap so the offending animal is guided straight in. I can't count the number of feral and otherwise offensive cats that have been dispatched by Old Mr. Conibear. I once lived in a rather remote area of Arizona. We enjoyed the many species of wild life there, until a couple of "cat lovers" moved in with no less than 25 or 30 cats. Within weeks, there were no baby rabbits, squirrels, or quail left, as well as a noticeable decline in the number of birds. The other residents employed Conibear traps and within a couple of weeks reduced the cat population by 28. Problem solved. Properly used, they present little danger to other wildlife species, and family pets should be kept at home until the problem has been solved. Occasionally, a skunk may find it's way into the trap and that presents a rather odorous problem for the trapper.
