In regard to skeeters.

The larvae of a giant African species, Toxorhynchites brevipalpis, feeds on the larvae of other species, devouring hundreds. As adults they feed only on nectar and plant juices and NO blood.

In regard to coyotes.

I take the dogs and hike around in the rice fields on Sundays. There are three grown coyotes that I know of. I see them periodically. Between the fields, the undeveloped land and the subdivisions I would estimate that these coyotes range over about three thousand acres. They have been there for almost three years now.

Normally the rice fields would be full of rats and mice which my dogs just looooove to chase and dig for. None. Rabbits are gone. Used to be a lot of snakes, especially water moccasins. None. Land turtles, none. Aquatic turtles in the ditches and the bayou, almost none. Racoons and possums, gone. Ground birds, none. Squirrels, none. Frogs, almost none. Reports of cats and dogs missing from subdivisions, yep.

All of that life just disappeared in about three years.

Coyotes aren't special and they aren't noble. They will just eat the land up and move on if they have some place to go, or they just die from hunger and disease.

It's all about balance and, when necessary, management. Other life has as much right as predators. These three coyotes need to be eliminated. Sadly it's not up to me to make that decision.

We live in an age when no-one wants blood on their hands, but omission is just as red and it doesn't wash. Being human has it's responsibilities whether we like it or not. Sometimes it just comes down to hard reasoning.
