Lighthouse of "la Jument" and the guard Theodore Malgorne, in the storm. Erected on a stone called la Jument, "Ar-Gazec" in breton. Route of Fromveur near the island of Ouessant, Sea of Iroise, west Brittany.
The keeper has survived to the wave.

I would say, according to the photos in this, as I do not read the French language; (article here)

the seas are very calm, as the lighthouse is built on a rock. It becomes obvious that the seas become quite turbulent in high tide storm, thereby the ocean waters rising quite high.
Although the article is in French the photos are impressive. I shall continue searching for other sources to find how the lighthouse was actually built with the technology of the day.
