Russian military forces would overran to NATO troops in the Baltic states within sixty hours, according to a simulation by US Rand Corporation research center.

Simulating numerous scenarios Rand came to the conclusion that 27 Russian armored and mechanized battalion would destroy 12 NATO light battalions and thereby occupy Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

The most likely direction of a Russian attack would be over the northern and southern border of Latvia. Russian forces in Latvia would join near the capital Riga and therefore occupy that State. The rest of the forces would subsequently attack Estonia, an area with significant Russian national minority.

A disaster for NATO

The only hope for NATO troops would be to concentrate military forces near major cities and setting up smaller units which should only slow down the Russian progression. "The outcome of the simulation is a disaster for NATO," concluded the report.

Rand researchers warn that the NATO forces on the ground are just not nearly as equipped as their Russian rivals. NATO has no tanks deployed in the Baltic countries, while all Russian units have tanks. An additional problem is Kaliningrad, the Russian enclave between Lithuania and the Poland from where some attacks on Lithuania would be stet off.

Research conducted between summer 2014 and spring 2015 found that even common action between Baltic and American troops along with US air strikes could not stop the advancement of Russia.

Light NATO troops

Seven of 12 NATO battalions are domestic forces that have only one armored brigade and that is a battalion of American Strykers, light vehicles most similar Soviet BTR transporters. Although NATO warplanes could have a significant impact on the battlefield, at the end Russian heavy units would destroyed NATO troops.

"The conclusion of simulation is unequivocal.
The current NATO forces can not successfully defend the territory of most exposed members, "says the study. However, the successful defense of the Baltic states is feasible but costly option. Seven additional units, three equipped with tanks, could stop the rapid occupation of the Baltic. The cost would be about $ 2.7 billion per year.
