The United States, thru the Federal Reserve and Wall Street has issued credit to most nations of the world, including China. It is this credit issue that has led to the unprecedented boom of the late 1990's and early 2000 years.

For the most part, people do not understand credit. It is money yet to be made. It is owed. The debtor has the responsibility to create the money that is owed, at interest. There is far more money owed than has been created. Hence debt claims a premium.

This means the dollar will strengthen. It is the senior currency, and in times of recession/depression the senior currency always strengthens. The simple fact is far more dollars are owed than created. Hence debt takes on a premium. One has to come up with dollars to pay. Todays debt has become exponential relative to dollar issue.

A simple look a the U.S.Dollar Index shows this. It is in a bull market, and will continue to climb for the next 5 years.

Lowering interest rates is simply issuing more debt. The debt issue has to go somewhere. It goes into bidding up commodities, stocks, bonds, real estate, etc. Until storage fees, interest fees, user fees, malinvestment, etc. make holding the goods untenable. There is no yield to chase. Selling occurs.

Where I live, many can furnish a household by collecting whatever the neighbours put on the side of the road. It's called overproduction. Companies are laying off workers, and everyone is starting to tighten their belts....and the dollar gets stronger. They've dropped interest rates to zero, and the dollar gets stronger. The banks are pushing on a string.

In a recession/depression the purchasing power of the senior currency becomes second to none. It was the same with the British pound in the 1930's. It was the senior currency. Most debt was in pounds. The pound took on a premium. Nations had to sell to come up with pounds, because there were not enough pounds in existence to pay the debt. The pound's purchasing power climbed upwards. And yet folks said it would fail.

Remember peak oil? Back in the 1860's the British newspapers were screaming peak coal.
