Is Donald Trump our New Thomas Jefferson?

Some are criticizing Donald Trump because he is not a career politician. Wow! Have we forgotten our history? Once upon a time a man named Thomas Jefferson successfully espoused the concept of the “citizen-statesman”. He said that when men had reached a level of success in life they should consider dedicating a portion of their life to public service. He set the example. He was a successful and rich landowner and farmer. He came away from this life to dedicate himself to public service. This he did successfully, eventually attaining the presidency of our country. Then he quietly retired and returned to his farm.

As he explained it, such citizen-statesmen were not beholding to outside interests and could clearly do what was best for their country. The special interests held no control over them.

Today our political system is failing simply because we have ignored Thomas Jefferson’s system. Today politicians are mostly career politicians. It takes immense money to run for office. The bankers, big industrialists, oil companies, and special-interest lobbyists have the money our politicians need. But there are, as usual, strings attached to such money. Thus the politician, no matter how well meaning, ends up compromised and cannot do what is best for the people.

And thus our country is faltering.

Donald Trump to the rescue. From nowhere this guy springs onto the scene. He doesn’t want their money he says. He will do what is best for the country he says. I say give this guy a chance. I don’t care if he is sometimes a loudmouth. He is an honest loudmouth who wants to make my country better.

Somewhere up there Thomas Jefferson must be smiling. He wasn’t forgotten after all. And I have my fingers crossed that the American people see past the desperate thrashing about of the corporate controlled media as they try to turn us away from this great opportunity.
