20th Century Fox's Ernest Lehman screenplay version of the Michael Stewart stage play 'Hello, Dolly!' is a lavish and epic colorful musical extravaganza that features not only colorful costumes of 'the gay nineties', but, restored trains and carriages of that period, also. The lavishly furnished sets in this production serve to complement the fine acting, singing and dancing of none other than Barbra Streisand and that grumpier and stoic Walter Matthau who are supported by Michael Crawford, Marianne McAndrew, Danny Lockin, and E. J. Peaker in this tremendously upbeat show, a pleasant departure from 'shoot-em-ups' and running from Nazis, etc..

This excellent 1969 film is directed by the great singing and acting artist, Gene Kelly, a dependable veteran talent right at home in the musical productions department.

At some $25,000,000.oo production costs this film is not a cheapie and the quality shows in every sequence - plenty of period costumes, sets, etc., and what a great big fine cast.

Barbra Streisand has a special number with the great Louis Armstrong, himself, and, in addition to the upbeat scenes with other actors and dancers, and the marching band parades, Streisand performs some soothing, sensitive and introspective numbers as the young widow, Dolly Levi, pulling out all emotional stops to project the moods like only Streisand can, reaching an astounding effect.

As of DVD Release Date: August 19, 2003, there is a new widescreen version available which offers a 2.35:1 aspect ratio for terrific viewing.
