A Thanksgiving Hymn - "Morning Has Broken" - 3 cover versions (videos)
This morning, this day after Thanksgiving, I was looking to see what Thanksgiving songs were available to listen to. It's not quite like Christmas music of which there is an endless supply.
But I came upon one song that has special meaning to me: "Morning Has Broken", a hymn made wildly popular by Cat Stevens' recording of it.
It became special to me because I lived at for a year at a tiny informal commune in the woods of western Massachusetts and we used to gather each morning and sing this song in full harmony. We would put on the Stevens recording and crank up the volume and sing along at our own full volume. It was a great way to start the day with a little bit of a spiritual uplift and communal feeling.
I found three different covers that I like and thought I would share them today. Yes, I think it could be considered a Thanksgiving song since it appeared in a number of Thanksgiving playlists.
First, here is the original Cat Stevens version with on-screen lyrics so you can sing along.
Third Day is a Christian rock band formed in Marietta, Georgia during the 1990s. The band was founded by lead singer Mac Powell, guitarist Mark Lee and former member Billy Wilkins.[1] The other band members are bassist Tai Anderson and drummer David Carr. The band's name is a reference to the biblical accounts of Jesus' rising from the dead on the third day following his crucifixion. The band was inducted in the Georgia Music Hall of Fame on September 19, 2009.[2] They have sold over 7 million albums in the United States and had 28 number one radio hits.[3]
