CYRANO de BERGERAC - FULL CLASSIC MOVIE - Jose Ferrer, Mala Powers - Comment on Historical Impact to Audiences

This film's screenplay by Carl Foreman, based on the Edmond Rostand play, is the first English film version. Jose Ferrer, with his golden, resonant baritone voice and bold portrayal of the heroic character was Oscar-winning and is probably the best projection of Cyrano de Bergerac, a 17th century dramatist and swordsman.

On the first-ever presentation of this play in 1897 at the Porte Saint-Martin Theatre in Paris, France the audience reportedly went wild over it. Some claim the audience applauded for an hour after the final curtain was drawn! (1) It also represented a jab at the establishment system, and, like today's downtrodden citizens who need an inspiration of encouragement, they found it in the heroic character of Cyrano de Bergerac.

Judging from the over a hundred years of popularity, it appears that people have historically embraced 'Cyrano de Bergerac' as a re-affirmation of individuality, the individuality that world governments constantly challenge on such a personal basis.
