"Mysteries of Love" from David Lynch's "Blue Velvet"
Hobie's postings of exceptional music from movie soundtracks made me think of one of the most beautiful songs I ever heard in a movie, the haunting "Mysteries of Love" from David Lynch's incredible neo-noir film "Blue Velvet". The music was written by Angelo Badalamenti and the lyrics were written by David Lynch himself. Youtuber Sorehlam says of it: "One of the most beautiful and exquisite songs of all times."
I recently re-watched "Blue Velvet" when it began streaming on Netflix and I was completely blown away by it. I had not seen it since it came out in 1986 and this time I realized it was a nearly perfect movie in every way. I think I could write a whole book defending the statement that it is a perfect film.
At the end of the film and in the end credits I became aware of the haunting melody of "Mysteries of Love" and wondered about it. It had occurred in a memorable scene and, as I realized later, had been subtlely woven into the soundtrack in other places.
I found this version of the song which seems to have the best sound quality of several I checked on. I've put Lynch's deceptively simple lyrics below it.
To catch the full beauty of the song you can ignore the visuals in the video clip and just follow the lyrics.
Mysteries of Love (From David Lynch's "Blue Velvet" - OST by Angelo Badalamenti)
Written by: David Lynch (lyrics), Angelo Badalamenti (music)
Sometimes a wind blows
and you and I
float
in love
and kiss
forever
in a darkness
and the mysteries
of love
come clear
and dance
in light
in you
in me
and show
that we
are Love
Sometimes a wind blows
and the mysteries of Love
come clear.
I also found this clip of the scene in which the song figures most prominently. The two stars (Laura Dern and Kyle MacLachlan) dance together and feel the love that has grown between them.
The day after I had re-watched "Blue Velvet" and before I had discovered these links to the full song I was so haunted I went back to Netflix and watched the above scene again and again. I had the captions on so I could see the words and I was just amazed at how Lynch created an unforgettable almost mystical mood blending visuals and music and lyrics together.
