At my most recent dental appointment, my dentist determined that I had a small abscess near my back molar and recommended that I make an appointment to see the local peridontist to determine the cause of the problem and whether corrective action needed to be taken.

As it turned out, the peridontist is out of the office this entire week, so the earliest I could make an appointment was scheduled for a week from this Thursday. In the interim, his office recommended and prescribed a common antibiotic - amoxicillin (Amoxil) - that I could pick up at the pharmacy of my choice.

Knowing what I know about the nature and risks of allopathic medicines, I took the opportunity to go online and check various websites about the known side effects of amoxicillin. Below is what I found on just one website:

Amoxil (amoxicillin) is an antibiotic, closely related to penicillin, used to treat many types of infections caused by bacteria. Amoxil is available as a generic drug termed amoxicillin. Amoxil is used to treat infections caused by bacteria that are B-lactamase negative (B-lactamase positive bacteria are usually resistant to Amoxil); these infections are usually occur in the skin, lungs, urinary tract and eye, ears, nose, and throat. Amoxil may be combined with other agents (for example, clavulanic acid [Augmentin],) to make the antibiotic more effective.

Common side effects of Amoxil include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, vaginal itching or discharge, headache, rash, and swollen, black, or "hairy" tongue.

Amoxil is available in many preparations (capsules, tablets, chewable tablets, powder for oral suspension and pediatric oral suspension). Serious reactions of Amoxil include anaphylactic reactions that can be life-threatening; patients allergic to penicillins should not be given Amoxil. Other serious side effects include colitis caused by overgrowth of Clostridium spp in the intestines, seizures, hives, jaundice, and rashes. Treatment in pregnant women and women who are breastfeeding should be done with caution.
