This afternoon, Russian warplanes struck the first blow to the militants in the province of Homs, Syria.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the Russian armed forces will not "sink into the conflict in Syria, headlong."

Damascus today appealed to Moscow to ask for military assistance.
