THE TRUTH AS HIDDEN IN FICTION: "SABOTEUR" BY ALFRED HITCHCOCK IN 1942
DESPITE THE GENIUS OF HITCHCOCK'S AMAZING "FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT", AND ITS WELL-DOCUMENTED SUCCESS, THIS EXCITING FILM WAS PANNED BY FILM CRITICS AND FLUNKED OUT BADLY AT THEATERS.
The fact that Carole Lombard was killed in a plane crash over Nevada, while touring to raise money for the war effort, seemed at the time to have no connection to the kind of "sleeper agent" skulduggery which made "Correspondent" so memorable.
Orson Welles, another of Hollywood's luminaries at the time, told his friends -- privately -- that he thought Anerican NAZI sympathizers were somehow involved in sabotage of that plane. Fifteen U.S. soldiers were also killed that day, January 16, 1942, along with the pilot, Lombard's mother and Otto Winkler.
Carole Lombard had been married to Clark Gable for almost three yeas at the time of her tragic end, on TWA Flight 3. She had apparently earned the enmity of American fascists with her sterling performance in "To Be Or Not To Be". That comedy depicted the German Nazi officers, in Poland, as fools, clowns, and common thugs. It also made Jack Benny a huge success.
Priscilla Lane is the misunderstood hero's love/hate interest, and is another example of Hitchcock's preference for heroic women, and blonde at that. Saboteur. Free on You Tube.
