Project Space port in Udbina (Croatia) in which Swiss Space Systems (S3) wants to invest has entered the final stage of preparation and by the end of this month should be carried out final preparations for obtaining concessions at local military airport.

Business Journal learns that, after the Ministry of Defence formally gave the green light to the military airport in Udbina to include the spaceport, up to the end of September to Lika should come the S3 team and perform the measurements needed to apply for a concession.

Slobodan Danko Bosanac (pictured), head of the S3 Croatia, and scientific adviser to Rudjer Bosskovic Institute, says that the plan is to do it as early as July.

The project, worth 70 million euros

"Because of the heat, previously was decided that the measurements, which were approved by the Ministry of Defence, should be moved to September, and now the plan is that 15 experts get accurate specifications so we could request a concession of the spaceport in Udbina," said Bosanac.

If gets concession, S3 plans to build in Croatia identical spaceport what is already being build in Switzerland. The value of the investment is estimated at EUR 70 million.

The launch of small satellites

In March, the company S3 Croatia announced that it already has 237 pre-orders for launch of small satellites from space port in Udbina. Swiss holding allegedly targets market of small satellites and their services would be offered at four to five times cheaper price of that of NASA.

In addition, S3 plans, to the opening of the spaceport in Udbina to start ZeroG flights from Croatia, and from 2018, they want to start the launch of satellites from Udbina, and with intercontinental flights.

So S3 has already contracted partnerships with French aircraft manufacturer Dassault Aviation, then with Airbus group, the leading Russian manufacturer of rocket engines Kuznetsov OJSC, the European Space Agency and the Belgian Institute Von Karman.

As Pleso, but directed into space

In Udbina is planned assembling of satellites also and rocket engine for space flight. However, according to a Bosanac, a key part of the project is construction of development center for high technology and scientific research focused on the universe.

"This spaceport by itself is very attractive, but essentially it's like you have another Pleso (main Croatian airport that is now being upgrated to local hb by French company), only that this one is focused on the universe. The key is to enrich this project with scientific and research facilities that would attract capital for further development and research, "said Bosanac for business daily.
