I know many folks have come to believe that power will always be there or at the least a rolling power outage, it will be back.
Many of us at rumormill have been working diligently for years to provide alternate sources of heat and at the same time sharing this information at Rumormillnews.
Air is your most important need, see how long you can go without it. Then water should be considered as the second most important need, followed several weeks after by food.
You can go without food much longer than you think. I recall not eating once for over a week and when i did then have access to food, I could no longer eat as much, in fact, very little filled the hole so to speak:)
You will need to find a way to produce an alternate source of heat, I'm working on several (have been in the works for a couple years), I'm very close.
In the winter you can store food (to refrigerator type ability) (close) by digging a whole and placing a garbage can down in with the top a few inches underground, instructions:

A gas generator can help but remember this cannot go in the home or living area. A solar one can be placed in the living area and will not be heard (something to consider).

Store as much drinkable already filtered water as possible and you can keep hydrogen peroxide to help to clean water that has been stored an extended period of time.
All you need to do is pour the 2 mL 35% food-grade hydrogen peroxide into the gallon of water. If you don't trust hydrogen peroxide completely, you can add 50 mL of chlorine. If you haven't been drying, canning, growing food you need to start immediately and get as much as you can.

You also need protection, fences help, firearm, bow and arrow, knives, boar
Boards with nails hammered clear through make a painful weapon, knives, etc. You also must prepare your mind mentally and it is something I have worked on for years. Understand there are those that will pose as friend when they are not so you must consider that most are not, difficult, I know.
Place a weapon in every room and it is better if you have more than one in different locations. (of course if you have small children you must be careful).
Know where your closest water source is and plan on not getting there by your car, if you can, great! Otherwise, plan on walking,
and depending upon dangers to be decided by you (use
your brain)the hour you go, walking versus riding a bike perhaps and also have neighbors you can count on.
Grow food inside this winter, love and help as many as you can but also remember sometimes you have to say no. Pray! Pray A Lot!
Practice different scenarios in your head so that you are ready for as much as possible. Know what is happening around you and to others, don't be arrogant and think it can never happen to you, big mistake!
Have iodine pills and if you have a basement; understand what it would take to live in it fully and make sure you have enough supplies in case of nuclear disaster. Think it is about 8 days, I myself would stay down about two weeks.

You will need to take your animals with you, unless a horse or something like that. One Maybe? You need to plan for everyone to eat drink and urinate & defecate. A Bucket with a garbage bag makes a great toilet in a pinch. Several buckets with lids would be really useful to have! Also something to keep your mind going and a way to tell night from day and mark the days will be useful.
Also radiation isn't like many contaminates.

Why is water so good at blocking/absorbing radiation?
Water is good at shielding neutron radiation as is any hydrogenated material. Water, plastic, etc. If you have boronated plastic it with completely shield or block it since the boron will also absorb the neutron. Same with borated water. It is because hydrogen is about the same size as a neutron. Think of it as the pool ball effect. Say a neutron goes through a material and strikes a large nucleus. It’s like a pool ball hitting a bowling ball. It just bounces off in a new direction but doesn’t slow down any but if it hits a hydrogen nucleus it’s like two pool balls hitting each other. They both slow down. To shield gammas you need dense materials like lead or steel. Water will shield gammas but not as effectively. Thin plastic, a paper notebook, or water will shield betas. You don’t want to use a heavy dense material due to bremsstrahlung radiation. Just about anything will shield alpha radiation even the dead skin cells on your body. Alpha is not an external hazard but internally due to it’s size it can cause lots of biological damage.
