(Lynda Note: Mike, I came across a great video that you would like. It was by Mark Passio. On some issues he and I would agree to disagree, that's fine, that's human nature.
In this video, Passio claims that all the different religions commandments could be summed up with only one. Do not steal. Don't steal others, time, passions, dreams, innocence, energy-life, objects, beliefs, truths, traditions, etc. I rather liked that analogy :-) .. Lynda)

The one thing that you have that you can truly call your own is your time, and you only have so much and no more.
Obligations, and theft of your time by this world, leaves precious little of your time to you for your personal needs and pleasure.
Your personal time is priceless. The personal time of others is priceless.
In the interest of being considerate of others as you would have others be considerate of you, MrFusion's recommendation makes perfect sense.
You could just call it politeness.
