While Whoopi is careless with her wording she is likely sincere and is addressing something spiritually significant. The embryo or fetus is not making a choice but the spirit that is present and ready (or not) to incarnate in that body can make choices and communicate with the mother. A variety of scenarios can unfold and if a woman feels conflicted in her decision about whether to have an abortion she could seek to communicate with the spirit that would be incarnating so that both she and the other spirit can be at peace with whatever she chooses. You can kill an embryo but you can't kill a spirit, and the spirit may return to incarnate with the same mother in a future pregnancy. I would encourage people to consider this topic from the non-physical perspective, not limited by religious doctrines.
