Exactly what I am referring to is "image compression"...wherever a "long lens" (Telephoto) is used, image elements seemed to be stacked tighter together, front to back. Image "Depth of Field" (DoF) is practically nil.
If you look, you will notice that the striped flag background looks like it is immediately behind him. Distance compressed. Likewise, the same image compression occurs with facial features. If you want to SEE how image compression works, reference the cinematic CAMERA EFFECT (NOT DIGITAL--ALL DONE BY CAMERA!!!) termed "Dolly Out, Zoom In" seen in the famous "JAWS" movie.:

PS--Subject Lighting also has a huge effect on how the subject is perceived!!!
