Zoos in the US are administering thousands of COVID-19 vaccines to captive animals
A growing number of zoos are giving their captive animals experimental COVID-19 vaccinations, despite the fact that they are still under development.
Zoetis – a former subsidiary of Pfizer that creates drugs for animals – is giving more than 11,000 doses to nearly 70 zoos. The company will also give vaccines to more than a dozen conservatories, sanctuaries, animal institutions, and government organizations across 27 states in the US.
Zoetis originally aimed to produce dog or cat COVID-19 vaccines, thinking there may be a demand for them. But when minks began catching COVID-19 at fur farms, the company pivoted. The new vaccine will be given to more than 100 mammalian species.

Yes, animals at the North Carolina Zoo got the COVID-19 vaccine too
: By COVID World - November 4th, 2021
: DALLAS, TEXAS – A 14-year-old giraffe named Jesse died at the
: Dallas Zoo last Friday, making this the third giraffe to
: die at the zoo the past month. Earlier in October, two
: giraffes at the Dallas Zoo died within a week of each
: other. Suspiciously, this comes just months after the zoo
: confirmed they would be vaccinating ‘some animals’ against
: COVID-19. Fourteen-year-old Jesse died on October 29th, two
: days after suddenly becoming ill, while 19-year-old Auggie
: died from liver failure sometime around October 25th. On
: October 3rd, the zoo also euthanized three-month-old
: giraffe calf Marekani after she was injured.
: While the article only mentions primates, large cats, wolves
: and foxes, there is precedent for giraffes being vaccinated
: at other zoos across the world. Indeed, a newborn giraffe
: in the UK was named Margaret in honor of Margaret Keenan, a
: granny from Northern Ireland who was the first person to be
: injected with the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine in December 2020.
: According to CBS DFW, both adult giraffes had abnormal liver
: enzymes, suggesting possible exposure to a “toxin” of some
: sort, either through a food source, from the exhibit space,
: or introduced via a foreign object. Zoo officials have said
: they suspect the deaths may be connected, but the link is
: as-yet unproven. Extensive tissue testing is underway,
: including testing for encephalomyocarditis.
: Harrison Edell, Dallas Zoo Chief Mission Officer and Executive
: Vice President of Animal Care and Conservation told FOX 4
: that zoo officials are primarily considering dietary
: sources, including plants in the animal’s habitat as the
: culprit.
: A series of deaths taking place within a short timeframe, from
: what appears to be an unknown toxin, is a rare phenomenon.
: Edell states that he has contacted other zoos to ask for
: assistance looking into the matter, but the death of two
: giraffes from unknown causes is particularly unusual; Other
: zoos have not been able to provide much help or insight
: into the occurrence and claims ‘every possibility’ is being
: looked into.
: According to a report from 5 NBC Dallas Fort Worth, Dallas Zoo
: stated that they were preparing to vaccinate ‘great apes,
: and carnivores’ who were shown by research to be
: susceptible to COVID-19, despite no actual cases among any
: of the animals.
: While there are no specific reports on Dallas Zoo vaccinating
: their giraffes, Newsweek reported that Cincinnati Zoo began
: administering vaccines to “big cats, great apes (gorillas,
: bonobos, orangutans), red pandas, goats, giraffe, river
: otters, skunks, bearcats and domestic dogs and cats” on the
: 20th of October. The brand of vaccine and the dosage used
: were not specified.
: The sudden mysterious deaths of the three giraffes in Dallas
: Zoo could be an ominous sign of things to come, given the
: wide variety of animals given COVID-19 vaccines designed
: for humans . . .
