This is my analysis of the study and its findings...

This is a NEJM published study on Pfizer's immune activating injections which has sparked conflicting interpretations. The common focus is on the amount of natural infections that occurred in the treatment group and placebo group in the weeks following the 2nd injection. There were 8 cases in the treatment group and 162 among those getting the placebo, which was translated into 95% treatment efficacy in that time frame of a couple months (with new strains and time passing it is now being reported in media that the efficacy in the general population is substantially lower). What isn't focused upon is that there were no deaths related to infection reported in either the treatment or control group (a very small number of apparently unrelated deaths were recorded in each group) and there were much more adverse symptoms experienced after the injection among the treatment group compared to the placebo control group. "More BNT162b2 recipients than placebo recipients reported any adverse event (27% and 12%, respectively) or a related adverse event (21% and 5%). This distribution largely reflects the inclusion of transient reactogenicity events, which were reported as adverse events more commonly by vaccine recipients than by placebo recipients. Sixty-four vaccine recipients (0.3%) and 6 placebo recipients (<0.1%) reported lymphadenopathy." Thus, this study showed that people who receive the injections are much less likely to exhibit the natural infection in the near future but are vulnerable to symptoms of sickness and adverse side effects from the injection - if 20% of 20000 people experience mild to moderate reactions that is about 4000 people, a much greater number than the number of placebo recipients who had cases of the virus develop during the study. Did the treatment have a net effect of less suffering or death? To assess that it would require quantifying the severity of suffering experienced by the people who developed cases of the viral illness and the people experiencing adverse symptoms triggered by injections - in this particular study death from the disease or treatment did not manifest. A more in depth answer would require following a treatment and placebo group over a longer time period, which will likely never happen since the placebo participants and the whole population are encouraged to now get the actual treatment. From my perspective the way that vaccine efficacy is measured and reported is fundamentally flawed and lacking context...
