Ever since folks started talking about Adrenochrome on one social media site or another, I've been reminded of a movie I saw sometime in the '60s, but I couldn't remember its name. Today I happened to find it. :)

In theaters in 1960, "The Leech Woman" was the grade-C movie paired with grade-B "The Brides of Dracula" to make a double feature. I'm sure I went to see the Dracula one, but it's the other one that got stuck, long-term, in memory.

The basic premise was that there was a potion that could keep a woman younger than her years if the right ingredients were brought together. Those ingredients included an orchid from Africa, and a substance from a man's pineal gland. That substance was acquired by stabbing the man at the base of his skull with a special tool, a crystal ring with a curved protrusion (the stabbing part).

(I'd figure the writer of the script for "The Leech Woman" thought the pineal was "in there somewhere" and "base of the skull" was close enough for his purpose. :)

So, I've wondered if that film was someone's attmept to tell us about adrenochrome without getting so close to the truth that the film would be prevented from being made. Besides, the details of how adrenochrome is acquired (according to what we've been told) would have been horrifyingly unacceptable to most moviegoers in 1960 (and equally so today, to most) that "The Leech Woman" and decades later "Death Becomes Her" might be as close to the facts as possible to present. Or, maybe, perhaps the writer just picked up a 'vibe' from the mass consciousness and worked it into a script. Dunno.
