Sunday's maritime accident in the Mediterranean killed 800 people, was said on Tuesday in Sicily by representatives of UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration after talking to survivors.

"It can be said that 800 people were killed," said Carlotta Sami, UNHCR spokesperson in Italy, and then the IOM spokesman Flavio Di Giacomo confirmed this assessment.

Representatives of UNHCR and IOM talked with most of the 27 survivors who disembarked in Catania around midnight.

"We've heard their stories, there were just over 800 people on board, children of 10, 12 years. It was the Syrians, about 150 Eritreans, Somalis .. They set off on Saturday around 8.00 hours from Tripoli," said Sami .

"The survivors are from Mali, Gambia, Senegal, Somalia, Eritrea and Bangladesh," she explained. They were taken to reception centers in the area.

Italian authorities arrested two survivors, said Interior Minister Graziano Delrio after surviving arrived in Sicily.

Delrio said that the public prosecutor ordered the arrest of the two men, one of whom allegedly was captain of the ship and the other assistant.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott advised on Tuesday the European Union to follow the example of his country and rejects all migrants arriving by sea in order to prevent the drama like a shipwreck fishing boats on Sunday in the Mediterranean.

After representatives of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 800 migrants were killed in the shipwreck which occurred in the waters of Libya.

Dimitris Avramopoulos European Commissioner in detail on Monday put forward a plan of action in ten points which will serve as "a working basis" EU leaders who will meet on Thursday at an extraordinary summit.

The action plan foresees a doubling of funds for the mission maritime surveillance Triton, which will be able to patrol in a wider zone and participate in the rescue. It is anticipated and harsher measures capture and destruction of ships used by human smugglers.

However, according to Tony Abbott is the only systematic refusal of ships loaded with migrants effectively.

"Hundreds, maybe thousands of people drowned trying to reach Europe from Africa. The only way to prevent such a tragedy is to stop the arrival of these ships," he told reporters.
