I am also of the personal belief that most smaller stuff that is not connected to the grid via wires or antennas could probably survive totally unprotected.

I am a (retired) EE, a Ham, and a solar system aficionado and owner. (but I still have 3 generators, lol)

Here is my personal account:

Since I first installed the solar systems (i have two, one grid tied and the second wired into a portion of my home directly. Both are battery backed.

During the first 3 years when there were no protectors installed, I lost the inverter on the grid tied system twice and the charge controller once due to nearby lighting strikes. Although the solar panels are within 20 feet of each other, no damage occurred to the stand alone system.

When I finally got tired of spending time and funds to repair them, I installed industrial/commercial OVP and surge protectors on all dc and ac lines on both systems. There has been no damage for the past 4 years, but still plenty of nearby lightning strikes.

What I learned is that most of the damage came from the grid connected lines, which makes sense because of the long wires.

Certainly a local lightning strike is much more devastating to SS electronics than a emp some miles away. EMP's are not magic in that they are immune to the inverse square law attenuation and far field effects. Long wires act as antennas and provide "gain" to the field which result in voltages high enough to cause failures.

Nevertheless, I do store my backup ham equipment and critical electronic spares in galvanized garbage cans. just in case...

Batteries and a way to charge them will be invaluable when the grid waves bye-bye... and it will, eventually, for real.
