I lived across town in Bernal Heights and I was popping popcorn for the world series, I could see Candlestick park out my Kitchen window when the stadium went dark and the house starting shaking, phone and electricity died.

The house was built on rock and I had clip catches that kept my cabinet doors closed...but I did watch the ceiling light swing back and forth for what seemed like several minutes.
The inside of the house was fine but the outside above the garage had buckled a bit.

Even though I couldn't call out, my son was able to call me from Marin County where he lived and informed me of the freeway collapse and all he was seeing on TV.

I worked at a hardware store and decided to go back and see how things were there...driving carefully through the debris in the street.
Well almost all glass items were broken and scattered on the floor. Lamp oil, kerosene, paint and other flammables all mixed together. We grabbed bags of sand to absorb the mess.

Meanwhile customers were coming to the door of the store from the Marina looking for camping supplies to camp out in Golden Gate Park since they couldn't go back to their houses.
Also we were getting requests from UCSF Hospital one of our commercial accounts that was just a few blocks away.

With flashlights and calculators we kept the store open until midnight to assist our neighbors with their needs while trying to clean up the mess in the store. Thankfully the store was well stocked with flashlights and batteries, tents and camp stoves to sell to the community.
I was pleased we didn't price gouge anyone either.

When I returned home I found out my family had taken in a doctor from Colorado that had come to town for the game.. that had found that her hotel was damaged and she had no transportation to go elsewhere..many people at the game were stranded.

What a night!
