"Ante and Adolf were great friends. It's like they've known each other all their lives. They used to be serious about remembering difficult times, but there were also times when they were joking and hugging as if they were brothers. It seemed as if they had grown up together, ”said a brother and sister, who now live in Zagreb but are originally from a Dalmatian island.

They asked us not to mention their names, and in return they will tell us the story he told them and backed up with photos, of their grandfather Tonči Ćurković. He emigrated to Argentina in the 1930s, where he ran a successful business before returning to Croatia with his family.

Ćurković is one of the few Croats who has witnessed frequent meetings between Nazi leader Adolf Hitler and the head of the Independent State of Croatia, Ante Pavelic. For years, conspiracy theories have emerged in various circles that Hitler did not commit suicide in Berlin, but somehow managed to escape to South America. It was also said that he met with Pavelic several times there, but despite Pavelic's large number of contacts with Croatian dissidents at the time, he never mentioned it in public nor ever recounted one of the anecdotes. Nevertheless, that Hitler and Pavelic met, now we are confirmed for the first time by Ćurković's grandchildren, whose grandfather was present with Hitler's and Pavelic's frequent companionship.

Old friends

Although some state that the first meeting between Hitler and Pavelic took place as early as 1953, Ćurković's grandchildren say their grandfather first witnessed their meeting only in late 1954. Ćurković was already a relatively wealthy merchant who owned the property on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, and At that time, Croatian emigrants approached him and asked him: "Can your boss ask you for a favor?" Curkovic was aware of the fact that Pavelic had lived in Argentina for years, but had no contact with him. He was asked to give his property to Pavelic from time to time so that he could "meet with an old friend." Curkovic agreed and Pavelic quickly arrived at his house. They spent the day together, and the next day a guest appeared.

It was, of course, Adolf Hitler himself. Curkovic told his family in detail what the encounter looked like. Hitler, he claims, did not change much except that he did not have his characteristic mustache and walked slightly worse. As soon as he appeared at the door, Pavelic jumped in to warmly hug him and help him get to the table. They talked for a long time, remembered the war years, talked about their childhoods and families, but also made plans for the future. Such meetings were repeated almost a dozen times at Ćurković's house, and he would also be invited to join him in the talks. They were like old friends, grandchildren explain today, adding that the meetings between Hitler and Pavelic were not only held at Hitler's, but also at other locations, especially at Pavelic's house.

Confirmation in Finnish documentary

That this story does not sound completely crazy is borne out by the testimonies of others who also attended the meetings. Carpenter Hernan Ancin told one such story when he said he worked as a carpenter for a man who lived in Argentina by the name of Pablo Aranjos. It's the pseudonym, and perhaps the most famous, used by Pavelic in Argentina. In one Finnish documentary, Ancin witnessed one of the meetings.

"It was basically the same. He had gray short hair, cropped by a soldier. No mustache. When Hitler arrived, he held up a clenched fist with his right hand outstretched. Pavelic approached him, lowered his fist to Hitler's, and hugged her. Then they smiled and Pavelic shook hands with Hitler. They always said goodbye, ”testified Ancin, who is pretty sure it happened in 1953. He said Pavelic and Hitler invited him to sit down with them and offered him coffee. "At that moment, Pavelic tells Hitler that I am the carpenter who is responsible for everything he sees in this building. Hitler bowed to me at that moment, as if to greet me. I was close to him, drinking coffee with him, convinced it was him, ”Ancin said in the Finnish documentary Kuningaskunnan Tuuli (Kingdoms Winds).
