Viet Nam: 1968. I was the Airborne Catholic Chaplain. Just finished the second Mass in the jungle. Loud explosion. Young soldier, with tears, said "Dave Bell was killed" "Bring me the body. They laid it on the ground...I unzipped the body bag. There on his chest was the Brown Scapular. I imparted the Last Rites. When I stood up, the company of 200+ soldiers were kneeling in a circle with their helmuts off.
Forward 30 years... I noticed Dave Bell's name on a list of KIA
in that year with his home town listed. Finally got through to his elderly parents. "I hope I'm not disturbing you...I wanted to tell you that I was there when he died. They wept! "We've prayed 30 years that when our son died a priest would be there.
I kinda choked up. "Never underestimate the power of a woman when that woman is the Mother of God.
At every Mass I take them all with me to the Altar of God...
