"The Hinds County Sheriff’s Department and the Clinton Police Department worked together on a three-day operation to uncover human trafficking and prostitution within the metro Jackson area and wound up arresting 23 people.

The 23 arrests spanned multiple charges including prostitution, procuring the services of a prostitute, drug possession and enticing a child for sexual purposes, according to a news release.

Human trafficking is when a trafficker uses force, fraud or coercion to compel a victim for purposes of forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation.

While the CPD did not find distinct patterns to suggest human trafficking activity in Clinton, Ford Hayman – the Clinton police chief – said human trafficking is not just an international crime but one that can hit close to home.

“It could happen here in the metro area and especially along major Interstate corridors in Mississippi,” Hayman said in the release.

“Human trafficking is in most cases a hidden crime that operates in the dark. The more we can educate the public and raise awareness to its existence, the more quickly we can identify victims and perpetrators.”

All the suspects arrested in the trafficking operation were identified online as they attempted to solicit prostitution-related activity.

Their online interactions resulted in them traveling into Clinton to conduct their illegal activities, leading to their arrests.

Clinton police have not released the names of the suspects and victims in efforts to assist in the rescue of the human trafficking victims. One exception, however, was Corey Myers.

Myers, 29-year-old man from Apopka, Florida, was charged and arrested for felony enticement of a child to meet for sexual purposes.

Other arrests in the operation span outside the metro that include Oklahoma, Michigan, Florida and Virginia.
