Here's some background information on the numerous and devious schemes concocted by Churchill, in an attempt to bring the U.S. into the war. Two of the first three articles are presentations by British historian David Irving, who manages to combine humor with a wealth of information, culled from a great variety of sources.

In the first article, Irving describes in detail several of Churchill's plans. The British codebreakers (there was an army of 3,000 of them) at Bletchley Park had cracked the Japanese codes, possibly before the Americans, so British intelligence was well aware that the Japanese were intending to stage a major attack on the U.S. The British had also cracked all the German codes - navy, air force, army and diplomatic. Churchill arranged for British ships, with American escorts, to cross the Atlantic along routes where he knew U-boats were patrolling, in the hope that a German submarine would sink an American ship.

Another scheme was to try to convince the American people that Hitler was intending to invade South America, then move into the U.S. from there. British intelligence created a map, which was presented to the Americans as being of German origin, in an attempt to give this absurd idea some credibility.

In 2001, I visited Omaha and Gold beaches, with a friend who was particularly interested in military matters. At the huge cemetery, the bell tolled slowly and mournfully. I saw Pointe Du Hoc, with the German gun emplacement still there. Many of the unfortunate soldiers who were chosen to attack the Germans by scaling the cliff were on a suicide mission, as they were easy targets for the enemy waiting at the top. But perhaps heavy losses were also part of this monstrous plan.
