The bullet (and the rifle, and the shooter, and everything else attached to the earth by gravity) is moving laterally (horizontally, if you will) at the same speed the earth is revolving... approx 1040 mph. That's why, neglecting air resistance, the bullet arrives at exactly the same place the rifle does a couple minutes later...

Before the bullet was fired, and the month after it was manufactured, it was moving horizontally. It still is moving horizontally, actually. So are we all.

Shooting 'straight up' is the misconception, because the bullet and rifle have the same lateral (horizontal) motion.

Go take a ride on merry go round and jump off the edge while it is moving. One can get the concept quite easily then.

Of course, high school physics can teach the lesson without the oops, if one just listens...

And as for airplanes, it is quite similar. There is lift, thrust, drag and GRAVITY... Gravity is pulling on the plane, too, and power (thrust and lift) must be used to change the effect of moving to a different location on the earths surface, or to hold a course on the same location.
