UPDATE: POSSIBLE "DIRTY BOMB!" --- I-68 Shut Down at MD - W.VA Border - "Explosives" during Motor Vehicle Stop
Interstate Route 68 is shut down in both directions in West Virginia, near the Maryland border. Initial info is that a State Trooper made a motor vehicle stop and may have detected Explosives requiring an extensive investigation.
The closure in the eastbound lanes is at mile marker 23, which is the Bruceton Mills exit, according to WV 511. The westbound lanes are closed at the state line, according to Maryland State Police.
Eastbound traffic is being diverted off the interstate at the Bruceton Mills exit. Traffic between the Bruceton Mills exit and the Hazelton exit is being turned through the median onto I-68 westbound.
It is unknown how long the interstate will be closed, 911 officials said, but drivers should expect long delays, according to WV 511. Eastbound drivers in particular should expect a one to two hour delay, as of 11:45 a.m., WV 511 said. Drivers are advised to take alternate routes, Maryland State Police said.
The West Virginia State Police are handling the incident. No details have been released on what the incident is but police radio traffic seems to indicate the presence of Explosives.
A local reporter from WBOY-TV Channel 12 arrived on the scene and was turned back by law enforcement, without releasing details.
Here is what I have been able to determine via my former colleagues in the FBI:
It was allegedly a traffic stop for speeding which then resulted in the Secret Service, FBI, and state police swooping in and shutting down the interstate, saying that it's not going to be open any time soon.
It is a "lengthy investigation" and "apparatus" is being brought in. Think bomb apparatus.
UPDATE 1:03 PM EDT --
Now receiving reports - as yet UNCONFIRMED - that the device(s) found in the motor vehicle " may be a dirty bomb." Not certain if "dirty" by radiation or by Biological component, but that is the "skuttlebutt" at this time.
Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are racing to the scene.
More updates to follow, check back . . .
UPDATE 2:23 PM EDT--
A total of SIXTEEN (16) MILES of Interstate 68 is presently closed by law enforcement and a traffic nightmare exists in both West Virginia and Maryland as evidenced by the Google Traffic map showing dotted, red, dashed lines on the map below.
Why close 16 MILES of Interstate????? Even if a vehicle had explosives, they wouldn't need to close 16 MILES. . . unless there is another component to the "explosive" --- like a "Dirty Bomb" perhaps?
MORE:
Whatever this is, must be HUGE in importance. The federal government has multiple AIRCRAFT engaged in a search pattern in that area of West Virginia/Maryland as shown by the radar tracking patters below:
"FLYING-IN APPARATUS"
My former intel colleagues now tell me the feds are bringing in "Apparatus from Hagerstown." When I asked what type of "apparatus" Hagerstown might have that West Virginia does not have, they responded "What's in Hagerstown? Fort Deitrich."
WHOA! Fort Deitrich, MD, is the United States BIO-WEAPONS LAB. . . .
MORE:
"Hundreds" of fire trucks and ambulances were called-up in both West Virginia and Maryland and are being pre-positioned. There is no fire. And even if a vehicle with a bomb exploded, you don't need HUNDREDS of fire trucks or ambulances. That area of West Virginia has pretty much no population.
UPDATE 2:56 PM EDT--
I have now confirmed that when the "apparatus" from Hagerstown arrived, "the area was rendered-safe. "
Interstate 68 westbound from Maryland into West Virginia has now been re-opened.
