Texas Secretary of State — 58,000 ILLEGALS Have Recently Voted in Texas Elections

Posted by Tim Brown

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced that there were 95,000 individuals who had been identified “non-US citizens” as being registered to vote in the Lone Star State. What’s more striking is that evidence presented by Texas Secretary of State David Whitely confirms that 58,000 of these individuals have broken the law and voted in “one or more” recent elections.

Despite fake fact checkers’ Snopes’ claims that the allegations of these non-citizens voting are “unproven,” the evidence suggests otherwise.

First Paxton tweeted, “VOTER FRAUD ALERT: The @TXsecofstate discovered approx 95,000 individuals identified by DPS as non-U.S. citizens have a matching voter registration record in TX, approx 58,000 of whom have voted in TX elections. Any illegal vote deprives Americans of their voice.”

Of course, most of us who have been paying attention have expected the numbers to be much larger.

Governor Greg Abbott thanked both Paxton and Whitely.

“Thanks to Attorney General Paxton and the Secretary of State for uncovering and investigating this illegal vote registration. I support prosecution where appropriate. The State will work on legislation to safeguard against these illegal practices,” he tweeted.

Even President Donald Trump picked up on the news and added, “58,000 non-citizens voted in Texas, with 95,000 non-citizens registered to vote. These numbers are just the tip of the iceberg. All over the country, especially in California, voter fraud is rampant. Must be stopped. Strong voter ID!”

But what about Texas voter ID laws already on the books? According to Fox News, Texas has some of the “toughest voter ID laws in the nation.”

“Every single instance of illegal voting threatens democracy in our state and deprives individual Texans of their voice,” Paxton said in a statement. “Nothing is more vital to preserving our Constitution than the integrity of our voting process, and my office will do everything within its abilities to solidify trust in every election in the state of Texas.”

“We’re honored to have partnered with the Texas Secretary of State’s office in the past on voter initiatives and we will spare no effort in assisting with these troubling cases,” Paxton added. “My Election Fraud Unit stands ready to investigate and prosecute crimes against the democratic process when needed. We have obtained a number of successful non-citizen voter fraud convictions, including prison sentences for Rosa Ortega in Tarrant County and Laura Garza in Montgomery County. And earlier this month, investigators from our office arrested Marites Curry, a non-citizen charged with illegal voting in Navarro County. Nothing is more vital to preserving our Constitution than the integrity of our voting process, and my office will do everything within its abilities to solidify trust in every election in the state of Texas. I applaud Secretary of State Whitley for his proactive work in safeguarding our elections.”

The findings were the result of an 11-month investigation with the Texas Department of Public Safety, according to The New York Times. The 58,000 voters who had been voting was discovered to have been from 1996 to the present.

Meanwhile, the 95,000 are being sought to be purged from the voter rolls.

The Houston Chronicle reports:

Texas Secretary of State David Whitley said working with the Department of Public Safety, his office has been able to identify the potential non-citizens among those registered to vote, including 58,000 who have cast ballots before in Texas elections.

“Integrity and efficiency of elections in Texas require accuracy of our state’s voter rolls, and my office is committed to using all available tools under the law to maintain an accurate list of registered voters,” Whitley said.

Voter advocacy groups pointed out Friday that none of the state’s suspicions have been confirmed yet, and objected to the method used to identify the suspected non-citizen voters. They noted that 50,000 Texans become naturalized citizens each year.

The Secretary of State cannot remove the voters from the rolls. That is up to county elections officials. But Whitley has recommended counties take action by sending notices that would give the people who have been flagged 30 days to prove they are eligible to vote by presenting a birth certificate, passport, or certificate of naturalization. If they fail to respond, their registrations will be canceled by the county voter registrar.

The Secretary of State’s Office said Friday it was not prepared to release a list of how many voters per county are affected, but verified that Harris County has the most.

According to Paxton’s statement:

From 2005-2017, the attorney general’s office prosecuted 97 defendants for numerous voter fraud violations. In 2018, Attorney General Paxton’s Election Fraud Unit – with assistance from a criminal justice grant from the governor’s office – prosecuted 33 defendants for a total of 97 election fraud violations. Last February, the attorney general announced a significant voter fraud initiative and addressed key problems and policy areas related to election law.

Whitely added that the following combinations of matches between information in DPS-provided data and the statewide voter registration database are used to identify possible non-U.S. citizens registered to vote:

Last Name, First Name, and Full Social Security Number;

Last Name, First Name, and DPS-issued Driver License, Personal Identification Card, or Election Identification Certificate Number; or

Last Name, First Name, Last Four Digits of Social Security Number, and Date of Birth

If a registered voter is identified as a non-U.S. citizen, he or she should receive a Notice of Examination (PDF) from the county voter registrar indicating that his or her registration status is being examined on the grounds that he or she is not a U.S. citizen. The registered voter will then be required to provide proof of citizenship in order to stay registered, which may be done by submitting to the voter registrar a copy of one of the following documents:

A certified copy of the voter’s birth certificate

United States passport; or

Certificate of naturalization (Citizenship certificate)

If the person responds indicating he or she is not a U.S. citizen, or fails to respond to the Notice within 30 days, then the voter registration will be cancelled by the county voter registrar. County voter registrars have been provided with numerous training opportunities to ensure that list maintenance activities are conducted in accordance with state and federal law so as to not affect eligible voters.

Seems that they are at least taking things serious about making sure only eligible citizens are those who are to be voting in elections. That is a good thing.
