Federal Reserve Notes are not money they are in fact a promise to pay. However, the only thing you can redeem them for is other federal reserve notes. But clearly they are a debt instrument and not money and thereby should not be considered as income received. And in fact even under the IRS's own tax code a promissory note is not income until it is paid.

And while I tend to agree with this argument, this is one of the principal arguments made by tax protestor Irwin Schiff who wrote books and gave lectures on this subject... But in the end this argument did not work for Irwin Schiff and Schiff was sentenced to spend time in prison. IRS tax courts are not legitimate courts of law but are an administrative process and they control what can and can not be introduced as evidence and can also deny testimony from witnesses that a defendant may want to bring in to testify in his favor. In other words, it is a completely rigged system and you are stepping into the ring to fight an 800 pound gorilla that also has unlimited resources at their disposal. So even if you can put up a good fight they will usually always win by attrition.

I'm sure there are better ways to fight the IRS but do not wish to give advice here except to say that maybe you should try using a bit of logic on them and maybe just ask the IRS the following question:

"If the government can borrow as much money as they may need or want from the central bank without limit (as there is no longer a debt ceiling); and if the government can also by the authority granted under the Constitution lawfully print its own money, then why on Earth does the government have a need to take money from me or from any other citizen???"

Also remember that the Grace Commission report under the Reagan administration determined that all of the money collected under the so called "income tax" was spent and consumed on paying the interest on the national debt and that not one cent of this money actually went towards running the government.
