I became intrigued by this song recently and went searching on YouTube for a version that "sounded right" to me. I sampled a large number of recordings, vocal versions and instrumental ones, from Bill Evans to Oscar Peterson to Billy Eckstine to Tony Bennett, etc. I enjoy the Carmen McRae version I've posted a few times - but when I came upon the Jimmy Scott version, I felt there was some magic in it. :)
If you're not familiar with Jimmy Scott (aka "Little" Jimmy Scott) his voice may sound a little strange to you at first - it's a high countertenor - but just sit back for a moment and let his voice take you where the song wants to go. His phrasing may seem odd to you at first, too, but you may soon discover, it's masterful.
From his 1992 album "All the Way", here's Jimmy Scott (1925-2014) with "My Foolish Heart", written by Victor Young, lyrics by Ned Washington, and published in 1949.
