Remember that (fictional) scene from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves? The entire crew of merry men bow down and kneel before the triumphantly returned King Richard I (the Lion Heart) as played by Sean Connery. However, Robin's Moorish friend Azeem, as played by Morgan Freeman stands tall and proud. Simply put, Richard I was NOT Azeem's king. Therefore Azeem had no reason to kneel before Richard I, even through Azeem was in "residence" in Richard's realm.

It is the same with any royal today, and that includes the pope. If they are not YOUR sovereign, you don't bow or kneel before them! If you so much as nod your head as a bow, you have declared YOUR OBEISANCE AND SUBSERVIENCE to that royal. As Americans, we should NEVER do that, protocol decorum or etiquette be damned! 6,800 colonial soldiers died (in battle, only - wounded casualties are not included in this figure) in the American Revolutionary War to ensure we sovereign people in our own right would never have to bow or kneel before any man or woman again!

If you're not a subject of the crown (wherever the crown realm might be), don't bow, don't curtsy. If you're not a catholic, never bow or kiss the hand/ring of the pope (or cardinal or bishop, etc.)! It is not an honor for you to meet them! It is an honor for them to meet YOU!
