(video) 1972 - "The Vote" scenes from the film "1776" (10 mins)
The film shows John Dickinson's "Nay" vote, and then shows him leaving to join in fighting for America. I don't know how accurate that portrayal is, but it's consistent with the sentiment expressed in his "The Liberty Song", which concludes with this offer and hope of reconciliation with England:
This bumper I crown for our Sovereign's health,
And this for Britannia's glory and wealth;
That wealth and that glory immortal may be,
If She is but Just, and if we are but Free.
My original upload of this sequence, derived from my purchased videotape copy of the entire film, is gone from YouTube now, probably owing to a copyright claim. And, the video I posted last year is now gone also, due to a copyright claim by a Japanese company. Ponder that. :)
NOTE: The "signing" sequence, which I'd usually posted as a companion piece to this video, is also gone from YouTube now, and there doesn't appear to be a replacement for it...though one can pay $8 and view the entire lengthy film.
