In Response To: The TransAsia Airways Flight 235 HOAX! Explained (Jordon)
Hi, as many of you know I spent 31 years as a professional airline pilot. I would like to point out a few things that do not seem right to me.
First off, the airplane was supposed to be landing I gather. When any turbine powered airplane is on approach the engines are spooled way back. The crew typically is only carrying about 35 to 40% power through out the process. The reason I bring this to your attention is that this is the least critical phase of flight to experience a "flameout" or loss of fuel to a turbine engine. Because the airplane is in descent mode and close to the airfield only two things are generally done. First the non-flying pilot would declare an emergency to the controller they were speaking to at the time. Probably, the tower controller, if the flight was as close in as it looks. (I am not sure of where the flameout actually occurred) Normally, the call by the non-flying pilot would be something like this: "Transasia XXX just lost power on the right (or left I don't know which they experienced) declaring an emergency, roll the equipment."
The second thing that would also be simultaneously accomplished would be to add power to the good or operating engine. And I might add, the flying pilot would push opposite rudder to keep the plane straight. The power needed this close to the airport is not very much as the aircraft must continue descending to the runway. All this should be very natural for the pilot flying to do and to continue the approach. The approach should look and feel quite normal.
The next thing I see about this video and it struck me immediately was what the hell is going on with the plane's trajectory. It seems to be coming down in the video "pancake" fashion as if the wing has stalled and has no power at all. It does have some forward movement, but not what one would suspect of an airplane being professionally flown by a trained crew.
Finally, as Jordan pointed out, the fuselage size of the aircraft compared to the van going down the highway is just plain wrong. In the link below you can see a couple of shots of an ATR 72 with vans parked next to them. Both the van and the ATR 72 seem to have different sizes in comparison to each other in this video.
My initial impression and I reserve the right to think otherwise later as more film etc comes available is that this video is not of an aircraft under control in a normal final approach phase to a nearby airfield. My initial impression at the moment that I first saw the video was that this aircraft was not flying. NOT FLYING. My brain was screaming, what's wrong with this picture. Also, being schooled in Adobe After Effects which would be most likely used software for special efx for this portrayal, the job was not very well done.
My final statement is simply, the aircraft in the video is not undercontrol of a trained flight crew. It looks more like a model tossed up in the studio against a green screen and videoed. It doesn't look like a normal engine-out approach by a trained crew. I made three or four such landings in my career and the hard part was not the approach to landing.
Truly, something is amiss here. I suspect the use of CGI and not very well executed at that.
