At the ABA Board dinner, John O'Neill, Special Agent in Charge of the National Security Divison in the FBI's New York Office, told a riveting personal account of the attack on the warship U.S.S. Cole at Aden, Yemen. Mr. O'Neill is responsible for all counterintelligence and counterterrorism matters and has overseen thousands of investigations and led investigations on the bombings of several U.S. embassies and other attacks.

According to his attorney, former CIA general counsel Michael O'Neil "will decline to answer questions about his role in a security investigation of former CIA Director [sic] John Deutch" in a 7 March 2000 appearance before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. The attorney said that "O'Neil will not answer questions from the panel until the Justice Department completes its review of whether CIA officials acted improperly in handling the investigation of Mr. Deutch.... A Senate aide said the former CIA general counsel is expected to invoke his Fifth Amendment rights during the closed-door hearing."
According to Associated Press, "Ex-CIA Lawyer Pleads 5th in Probe," 7 Mar. 2000, O'Neil "invoked his right not to incriminate himself and refused to answer questions Tuesday [7 March 2000] from Senate Intelligence Committee members about computer security lapses by former CIA Director John Deutch."

Within minutes, the news had been passed up the line: from Freeh to Attorney General Janet Reno, from Reno to White House chief of staff Leon Panetta, from Panetta to President Clinton. Kallstrom's next call was to his number-two man, Tom Pickard, whom he instructed to call John O'Neill, head of the FBI's counterterrorism unit in Washington. O'Neill then called the president's special assistant on terrorism, Richard Clarke. And that was how it worked: From Kallstrom's car phone, the White House was now alerted and on the case.
As you may know from Associated Press reports of yesterday printed in the Washington Post, John O'Neill had a briefcase stolen--a briefcase which contained secret reports on his major investigations, including Flight 800. Incredibly, the FBI did not take any action against O'Neill for his negligence, and it concluded the secret material had not been viewed as it had no fingerprints.
O'Neill is a focus of much suspicion as a cover-up artist for major mischief. Questions and comments are welcome:
