Salzburg Talks Draw Protests

SALZBURG Clashes erupted late Sunday as riot policemen moved in to break up a protest by anti-globalization activists at a regional economic summit here.

At least five demonstrators were arrested and four police were injured by stone-throwing protesters.

The protests were taking place outside the three-day European Economic Summit, bringing together some 660 business and political leaders, including 15 heads of state and government.

Earlier, the protesters beat on police riot shields with sticks and threw stones. Several hundred demonstrators, some of them hooded, roamed outside a police barrier chanting such slogans as "Our streets, our streets!"

The police, who appeared to far outnumber the protesters, surrounded the demonstrators on three sides and prevented them from progressing toward the congress center.

Anti-capitalist protesters have disrupted numerous international gatherings in recent years and Salzburg police were determined to prevent a recurrence of the serious violence seen at an EU summit in Gothenburg, Sweden, last month.
