"Super Power Complex" Leads to U.S. Ouster From Human Rights Commission

BANGKOK, May 6 (Xinhua) -- One of the major factors that lead to United States' ouster from the United Nations Human Rights Commission is its "super power complex", a Thai newspaper said here Sunday in an editorial.

The Universal Daily News, a Chinese language newspaper headquartered in China's Taiwan province, said the ouster is too big a setback for the self-claimed leader of the world to bear.

The editorial said the new Bush administration brought the U.S. "arrogant and domineering" act to full play ever since it came to power in January, citing the United States' pulling out of the Kyoto global warming treating, ignorance of a missile deployment treaty with Russia signed in 1972 and failure to pay its dues to the United Nations.

The United States is some 580 million U.S. dollars in arrears and making very slow progress in fixing the debt.

The editorial mocked the remarks made by the spokesperson of the U.S. State of Department that without U.S. participation the U. N. Human Rights Commission's role would definitely be weakened, noting that these remarks demonstrated once more the arrogant attitude held by the United States.

The United States, a long-time self-styled human rights defender, was ousted from the 53-state U.N. Human Rights Commission in a secret ballot at its parent U.N. Economic and Social Council on Thursday for the first time since the commission was established in 1947.
