Just a thought:

America remains "the promised land" in the hearts of many people the world over.

The "United States", however, is a separate critter, an overlay of 'a nation' upon 'a country'.

Those who refer to themselves as "the US" or "the US government" are not directly equivalent to "America" or "the American people", though they presume to be acting in the name of the American people - increasingly, we recognize, they are _not_ acting on our behalf but in their own interests instead.

Perhaps it is that overlay, that imposition upon the heart of America, that needs to go away.
