US apologises for spy plane crash

THE United States has sent a letter to the Chinese government formally
apologising for the collision of an American spy plane with a Chinese
fighter jet.
Earlier a statement from the Chinese foreign ministry said it would
release the 24 crew from the EP-3 spy plane held on Hainan island in the
South China Sea since the collision 10 days ago.
The letter, according to the state Xinhua news agency, was delivered by
the US Ambassador Joseph Prueher and said the Washington government was
"very sorry" for the accident in which the Chinese pilot, Wang Wei, was
killed.
The letter added that the US was "very sorry the entering of China's
airspace and landing did not have verbal clearance" and thanked "China's
efforts to see to the well being" of the crew.
Until today President George W Bush had signalled he was unwilling to
apologise for the incident, although he had expressed sorrow for the
death of the pilot, because the collision took place in international
airspace.
However China denied this, saying the spy plane had entered Chinese
airspace illegally and that it should have gained permission before
landing.
