Lad - a friend has written me, suggesting you snoop into the impeachment trial of Samuel Chase.

I haven't done so myself, but I gather my friend is suggesting a review of those proceedings would clarify the context, atmosphere and intent back of the original 13th, to do with "reparations" payments to be paid to England after they _lost_ the War of 1812 - a neat trick, that, apparently pulled off by members of the BAR.

I gather my friend is saying the original 13th arose expressly to prevent any such "undue influence" (coming from the BAR or elsewhere) from affecting the country again.

Whether that finally proves "Esquire" and "Attorney" are related to titles of honor, I don't know - but it sounds like it might.
