Most firewalls will block port scanning and trojan access attacks. NOT EMAIL! Microsoft stinks for security.

"Ports" are access points (numbers)to programs over a network connection. For example to surf a web page you access Port 80 on the server to make the request.

When you use a dial up connection the IP address is assigned Dynamically, which means if someone just disconnected a moment ago, and at the same time you dialed up and connected, you may be assigned the same IP address that he had.

Now, lets say he was listening to Jeff Rense Using Streaming Real Audio, that program uses TCP port 7070.
If There was not ample time after he stopped the broadcast, or if he just got booted, then the server will still be sending packets of data to that port number.

In your firewall it may show up as an unwanted request or broadcast on TCP port 7070 (UDP 6970-7170).

Programs like "BlackIce" will give you details about the intrusion and the programs that may cause it. Sometimes more info than that on the intruder.
(Zone Alarm?)

For example, I get a PCanywhere Ping every day when I get home. Some guy logs in to PCanywhere and the program does a ping check accross some of the IP's that I happen to be dialing into.

(ports 5631-5632)

Which is a normal procedure for that program, but it does show up on my Firewall.

On the other hand, hackers tend to do Large port scans over many IP addresses to find one or two computers that have a vulnerability. They are not specifying the IP address, just scanning a block of numbers to find a trojan horse or a certain --- Microsoft :^( vulnerability.

If they wanted to log the IP of users going to RMnews's web site, they would need access to the stats or one of the core routers near the final hop to the server hosting RMNews. Which is technically possible....scary huh?, but like I said before, if your on a dial up account, your IP address changes each time.

How to find out some info on your Windows 95-ME PC:

First connect to the internet.
Go to Start - Run
Type: winipcfg
This will display the DNS and IP address info, plus some other important info to identify your computer.
Click the "More Info" Button.

Under Win2K pro type "ipconfig"

If you wish to find out more info about your intruder you can use programs like:

ping
tracert
nslookup (on NT or 2K pro)
http://www.networksolutions.com
