Freighter sinks; cargo washes ashore
A freighter sank off the coast of Miami over the weekend
and as a result, a major cleanup is underway along
South Florida beaches.

The "Anita" sank Saturday night about 45 miles southeast of

Miami, as it was on its way to Haiti. Coast Guard officials
picked up the Anita's distress signal and found debris from the
ship in the area where it is believed to have gone down. None of
the eight crew members that were aboard the ship has been
found. Officials believe rough seas were to blame for the
accident.

Because of the accident, debris which is believed to be from
the Anita, was washing ashore on Tuesday from Pompano
Beach to West Palm Beach.

There are drums holding about 15,000 gallons of vegetable oil
and approximately 16,000 pounds of fuel, in addition to other
substances that are washing ashore.

The Coast Guard hired a local clean-up company to start
cleaning up all the debris. They expect to complete the cleanup
by Wednesday.

The Anita was owned by Titan Foods and they are helping
with the cleanup.

The Anita was equipped with a special radio beacon that has
helped Coast Guard Crews locate ships faster. That device is
being compared to the Lojack system in cars, which helps
police find a car when it is stolen. Unfortunately, it didn't help the crew in this case, nor was the ship able to be saved, but authorities believe that it will save lives in the future.

The investigation into just what happened to the Anita
continues.
