My husband and I had a company in China for 7 years. We left in May of 1999 and are in the process of reopening in another province shortly.
Arafat will not get anything from the Chinese. The Chinese know there is no correct time for Arafat to declare statehood. If you read the Chinese papers, China backs only one plan and that is for the Palestinian and Israeli states to be contained within 5 Arab nations-Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Iraq. Iraq is to be the prime Palestinian broker and China favors Hussein and the Baathists as negotiators rather than Arafat. That is why in June there was news that Saddam Hussein was brokering a deal with the Palestinians for resettlement. Jerusalem of course is to be an international city.
Hussein is the only generally accepted head of state in the Middle East who can retain order. In 10 years of sanctions, ever hear of riots in Iraq?
China also is looking at the possible breakup of Saudi. China is not the only nation viewing Saudi as a possible place of both Palestinian and Israeli expansion. Saudi's political infrastructure is balance precariously.Disintegration is inevitable.
