This campaign year is like living in a soap opera.

The self-anointed yackers of the airwaves - right and left - are doing their very best to
keep the backyard gossip flowing while America's problems are covered in sludge.

Have you heard any of the kings of yack get down to the issues?

Russ, Drudge and their talk-talk clones have us all believe that the most important issue
America must face is: "Did Hillary really say 'Jew bastard'" - ? Twenty-six years ago?

Really!

Did Hill and Bill have knock-down, drag-out brawls in the Arkansas governor's mansion
a decade ago? Really!

And did George W snort white powder up his nose - or guzzle a fifth of Wild Turkey
every day? And, who cares?

Matt Drudge, the Drew Pearson of the Internet, rakes muck while Rome burns.

There are more stories out about Ms. Clinton's hairdos than about the crippling issues
facing New York where, I believe, she is running for the U.S. Senate, not for an
appearance on Ricki Lake.

Who loses by all this petty distraction?

You lose, America.

Have we become so rich, so bored and fat, that we have turned what keeps us free into an
electronic Lion's Den? Our politicians have become mere players on a stage to entertain us
- with their entrances and exits - to be applauded, then thrown to the wings until the
next outrageous act changes the scene.

While America hee-heed over the latest Hillary gossip, five more U.S. citizens were beaten
by cops. The FBI announced the ability to intercept e-mail worldwide. And someone had a
golf cart fender bender during the Camp David Mid-East Peace talks.
