:to ditch their scandal-tainted premier of Hesse state or face a new
:election there that could threaten their power of veto in the

:The small Free Democratic Party that shares power with the CDU in
:Hesse urged the state premier, Roland Koch, to resign after he
:confessed to covering up illicit party funds stemming from the
:Helmut Kohl era.

:National leaders of the FDP, which shared power with Kohl for 16
:years nationally, threatened that their party would walk out of the
:Hesse coalition if Koch did not quit. Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder
:urged them to go ahead and do it anyway.

:41-year-old rising star that he covered up his knowledge that party

:The running crisis of Germany's Christian Democrats (CDU), sparked
:by revelations of the party's illegal secret finances, threw the
:allied Free Democratic Party (FDP) into a major dilemma Thursday.

:The leadership of the little liberal party wants its members to quit
:the Hesse region ruling coalition with the scandal-ridden CDU, FDP
:officials said.

:But the party headed by Wolfgang Gerhardt, who has his political
:roots in Hesse, stopped short of asking them to do so.

:And local FDP leaders appeared unwilling Thursday to make the break.

:The CDU-led coalition in Hesse depends on the FDP for its majority.

:In any event, few observers believed that Roland Koch could survive
:much longer as the CDU Hesse state premier, after he admitted
:Tuesday lying about the regional party's illicit secret accounts in

:FDP national leaders had agreed by telephone that the party should
:quit the coalition, although it was up to the regional party to
:decide, party sources in Berlin said.

:Koch Tuesday admitted deliberate deception about the origin of some
:1.5 million marks (about 750,000 dollars/euros) in funds for his
:election campaign.

:The premier claimed last month the money was a loan from the
:regional party treasurer. In reality, it came from secret accounts
:the Hesse CDU maintained in Switzerland. He also certified party
:accounts which he knew to be misleading.

:Talking to the N24 television station, Schroeder Thursday
:effectively called on the FDP to withdraw its key support from the
:CDU in Hesse or lose its credibility. "The FDP has a big
:responsibility in Hesse," the chancellor said.

:But FDP leader Gerhardt, 56, indicated he was not yet ready to
:resolve the dilemma, saying one could not decide the fate of a
:coalition lightly. An analysis of the situation is to be considered
:by a meeting of the Hesse party leadership Saturday.

:Sunday they had shelved efforts to clear up the scandal over their
:finances under Helmut Kohl, washing their hands of the man who
:dominated the party for a quarter century.

:Party leaders gave results of an internal inquiry to public
:prosecutors on Friday, saying Kohl still refused to name donors of
:$1 million in secret gifts he accepted during the 1990s.
:
:``We've done just about all we can to clear this up,'' said Kohl's
:successor as party chairman, Wolfgang Schaeuble.
:
:``The time spent preoccupied with ourselves is over,'' he told the
:Welt am Sonntag newspaper, repeating his plan to stand again as
:party chief at a congress in April.
:
:Kohl's admission last November that he broke the law by running a
:network of slush funds based on undeclared political donations has
:done untold damage to his once-unassailable image as the Cold War
:hero who reunified Germany.

:The confession sparked new revelations almost daily of improper
:financial practices within the CDU, triggering a record loss of
:support in polls and calls for the resignation of Schaeuble, who has
:admitted involvement in the affair.

:Kohl, who faces criminal and parliamentary investigations, resigned

:however, swung the balance of power towards Schaeuble.

:Not only did the party presidium publish testimony from former Kohl
:aides saying the slush funds existed throughout his 25 years as
:party chief, but it accepted Schaeuble's statement that a $50,000
:donation he took from an arms dealer in 1994 was not declared
:because of a book-keeping error.

:Asked if he felt strengthened by the outcome, Schaeuble told Welt am
:Sonntag: ``Yes I do, but that's not the decisive issue.''

:Schaeuble received backing from the CDU's Bavarian sister party the
:Christian Social Union, which has for years secured control for the
:CDU/CSU conservative alliance by representing it in the large
:southern state.

:``Wolfgang Schaeuble has our trust and is the man who can take the
:CDU out of this difficult situation,'' said CSU leader and Bavarian
:state premier Edmund Stoiber on ZDF television.

:Kohl's more overt rivals began isolating him from the party.

:CDU General Secretary Angela Merkel, who styled herself chief
:inquisitor in the internal inquiry, accused Kohl of having sought to
:``blackmail'' the CDU so he could cover his traces.

:clean about the things that left us open to blackmail,'' she told

:Social Democrats in polls, Schaeuble conceded the CDU would find it
