I thought I would post this now because it is really quite interesting as a test case overall.

As you may know, the Klamath Basin has been dried up by Federal Decree for the first time in thousands of years. The basin was an extremely huge, shallow lake a hundred years ago. This was traded for collecting water in several deeper lakes and running 1,400 miles of irrigations ditches over the land. Regardless of whether the water was in shallow ponds or in ditches, the land was always wet.

Then came the determination that the water was all needed for fish. Well, that's a different subject, and I don't want to get on that right now. But, the land was deprived of water for the first time in all those thousands of years. Not only did everything die on the land, plants and animals alike, but domestic wells began going dry since June.

Geologist and a riparian scientist were dispatched to the basin and shortly reported that the domestic wells needed the water leaching into the ground from the ditches or they would go dry. (I believe this may have played into why Norton allowed 75,000 acre feet into the canals.)

Now the water is flowing through all these canals. The land was so dry that 15,000 acre feet or more were lost just soaking into the dry ditches before the water would flow down them. I irrigated in an effort to save part of my pasture and the same was true there. The water did not flow normal. So dry was the land that the water just poored out and soaked in forever before advancing.

So, now water has been added. 75,000 acre feet of it to this very dry land.

The basin has begun to stink to high heaven of sulfer. This has happened before - for several months before our large earthquake.
I suspect that by drying the land out and then re-adding the water that we may precipitate an event.

I don't know that's true. I only know that the sulfer smell is getting more prevalent. I know that when I applied water to part of my land that so much gas escaped from some areas that it bubbled for hours. I know that the quality of my well water has changed and is full of gas.

The horses don't seem affected yet, but they rarely show anything until right before an earthquake, and I'm so busy with relief efforts in the basin that I may not be around to notice.

Anyway, should be interesting. It's an experiment that I hope none of you have to go through - and that never gets done anywhere ever again.
