Wash. Post's Katharine Graham in Idaho Hospital

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Katharine Graham, chairman of the executive committee of The Washington Post Co., was listed in critical condition late on Sunday at a hospital in Boise, Idaho, after surgery that followed a fall, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Graham, 84, was listed in critical condition in an intensive care unit, said St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center spokeswoman Amy Miller.

Miller said Graham underwent surgery after she was transported to Boise by helicopter. She was initially taken to a hospital in the Sun Valley area.

Miller offered no details on the surgery or on Graham's condition and said the hospital was not releasing any further information at this time. Graham fell on Saturday afternoon on a walkway at a condominium complex in Sun Valley, where she had been attending a business conference, the Washington Post reported on its website, citing an unnamed Post official.

Graham's son, Donald Graham, chairman of the board of The Washington Post Company, also attended the conference and was at the hospital with her, the Post spokesman was cited as saying.

Graham took over the Post Company in 1963 after the death of her husband and was chairman of the board from 1973 to 1993. She was succeeded by Donald Graham. The newspaper has been in the family since 1933, when Eugene Meyer, Graham's father, purchased it in a bankruptcy sale.

Under her leadership, the Post published the Pentagon Papers and the story of Watergate, the scandal that brought down the Nixon White House.

During the Graham years, the Washington Post Company grew into a diversified media company whose operations include newspaper and magazine publishing, broadcasting and cable, and educational services.

At age 80, Graham's won a Pulitzer Prize for her memoir, ''Personal History.''

She is a past chairman and president of the American Newspaper Publishers Association and a former board member of the Associated Press.

A prominent Washington hostess, Graham has entertained Presidents Bush, Clinton and Reagan in her Georgetown home.
