The crop formation pictured below was cut down shortly after Charles Mallet photographed it at the end of July. It was cut down simply because the farmer on whose land it appeared was due to harvest his crop. According to Charles the formation was a big one, consisting of some sixty small circles spanning over 315ft of wheat. Which naturally leads one to ask: what does this mean?

Located at Cannings Cross near Devizes in Wiltshire the formation was in the heart of crop circle country and home of yours truly . It's worth noting that the inhabitants of ancient Britain ascribed an almost sacred significance to this particular area; building various stone circles such as at Avebury, earthen mounds at nearby Silbury Hill and the less well known Merlin's mound at Marlborough, all within a radius of some 15 miles. An area which has become the epicentre, as it were, of crop circle formations.

Which begs the question: could the ancients have recognised something latent in the land itself that is now expressing itself in crop circles? A consciousness resident in the actual landscape which they once revered as the Earth Mother?

Russian teacher and mystic George Gurdjieff spoke of "planetary consciousness", in the sense that individual planets have, like each human being, an individual identity and awareness. It may not be very obvious but then how aware of you are the bacteria and other life forms that live on your body?
